General Public License (GPL)
General Public License (GPL) is a free software license that is used in many places and provides great opportunities. This license was developed in 1983 by Richard Stallman. So, the most important issue of this license is to distribute the software with the source code. That is, the source code is open. This allows the user to examine the source code, make changes to it and use it in their own projects. Thus, if the user wants to make changes to the software code can convert them to financial gain. But the software has to be licensed with the GPL.
The main purpose of the GPL license agreement is to show the user to know what he is using.
Some advantages of the GPL license agreement;
The user knows what is in the software.
The user may change the parts he does not like in the software.
The source code is open so that hackers can easily find out what they are doing.
The user does not stick to the company developed by the product. So, since the source code is in the middle, it can change itself or improve its software by getting support.
Open Source Code
Open source software is open software that everyone can see, examine and use. The most important feature of these software is that it provides the user the freedom to change the software. This feature has made an important contribution to the user. Because the user can change the source code freely and make changes to the code.
Some advantages of open source code;
- Low cost.
- It’s free.
- It is sturdy.
It’s quick. It also has continuity. (In other words, if the software company fails, the information is not lost.)
Open Source Operating Systems (LINUX, DEBIAN, UBUNTU, OPENSUSE)
Linus Torvalds (Creator of the Linux kernel)
Linux is an open source code development model and one of the most important examples of free software. This open source code can be modified and redistributed by the user. Linux was also developed by Linus Torvalds. However, there are a lot of distributions in the market with the Linux kernel as well as the bulk compiled and easy to install operating systems.
Some of the Linux distributions include;
Ubuntu, Debian, Opensuse, Fedora etc …
- Being open source facilitates application on the core structure. Therefore, linux is used for different purposes.
- Linux is widely used in mobile phones, pocket computers, laptops, desktops and servers. Therefore, it is listed among the alternatives of popular paid operating systems.
- It is possible to find a different linux distribution for each purpose. In other words, distributions such as Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, Pardus are common for home users. Also, on servers Debian, Fedora is more common. It is also possible to find distributions such as Edubuntu for training.
Debian is an operating system created by volunteers who have decided to make a free operating system. It is a linux distribution. All free.
Ubuntu is a Linux distribution. It is an operating system. Releases a new desktop and server version every six months.
Ubuntu’s goal is to provide computer users with a very simple, up-to-date and secure operating system to use and install.
OpenSUSE is a community project sponsored by Novell.
Making Linux the most widely used open source platform.
Making Linux the best distribution for new and experienced users.
Also, turn it into a platform of choice for Linux hackers and application developers.
