Acute care nurses are responsible for diagnosing patients with complex and life-threatening problems, constantly monitoring patients, applying quality and advanced acute care and treatment interventions, establishing therapeutic relationships with patients and their relatives, protective, healing and rehabilitative initiatives.

In Addition to the general duties, powers and responsibilities of the nurses;

1. Acute Care Nurses Duties:

  • It ensures that necessary precautions are taken to prevent the development of acute care infections.
  • In the evaluation of the patients, the scoring systems and scales adopted by the institution are applied and evaluated.
  • Provides monitoring of patients. It uses non-invasive monitoring techniques in monitoring.
  • It monitors the cardiac rhythm and communicates with the necessary team during emergencies.
  • Plans, implements and evaluates appropriate nursing care taking into account existing and potential problems of liquid-electrolyte and acid-base balance.
  • It plans, practices, evaluates, and cares for the patient in the ventilator to attempt to solve the patient’s breathing problems.
  • It plans, applies and evaluates appropriate nursing activities for basic interventional applications such as aspiration, oxygen therapy, body positions, general body care, postural drainage, aseptic applications (catheter / catheter care etc.).
  • It provides the appropriate nursing approach to prevent development by evaluating other injuries, risk factors, effects on prognosis, plans, implements and evaluates appropriate nursing care in case of occurrence.
  • It plans and implements preventive procedures for contracture formation in patients.
  • They know preventive procedures for embolism in patients, do necessary planning with physician and apply them.
  • They provide follow-up and appropriate positioning of patients with neurological diseases (aneurysm, KİBAS, SVO, etc.) and conscious offspring (intracranial hemorrhage etc.) and make neurological evaluations.
  • It initiates, monitors and records intravenous fluid infusion and blood / blood product transfusion processes in accordance with the institution’s policies and instructions; if possible problems or complications arise, the situation is reported to the doctor and the necessary procedures are followed according to the standards adopted by the institution.
  • Pace tracks the patient, caring and practicing.
  • Intra-aortic balloon pump monitors the patient placed, maintains and applies.
  • It determines the nutritional requirements of the patients (enteral and parenteral nutrition), plans the nursing care according to their needs and ensures the continuity of the sterilization of the appliances used and applied.
  • Provides nursing approach to acute care patients and psychosocial problems of their relatives.

2. Participation in the implementation of the medical diagnosis and treatment plan:

  • The patient evaluates the data collected and the changes in the general condition of the patient, records, normally the deviations inform the patient.
  • Together with other health personnel, they participate in the patient visit, contributing to the creation of the patient’s treatment and care plan.
  • It participates in invasive diagnostic and therapeutic interventions performed by the physician; prepare the patient for these initiatives, support during the procedure, monitor the patient after the procedure.
  • Collect blood, urine, fluid and tissue specimens for the patient’s laboratory tests; sends the laboratory, evaluates and informs the patient’s physician.
  • Know the types of drugs, different doses and possible side effects that should be applied for each age group; parenterally and externally prescribed medicines according to the physician’s request, depending on the drug applications and the principles of drug safety; records the effects and side effects of the applied medicines and treatments, the answers given by the patient to the treatment and remedies, and reports them when necessary.
  • Keep emergency medicines, medical supplies and devices ready for use.
  • It monitors the cardiac rhythm, recognizes interpretations, deadly rhythms and knows the necessary emergency attempts.
  • Follows consultation; solids.
  • Cooperate with the physician in emergency situations. It makes a blue code call in case of arrest. It participates in basic / advanced life support practices (such as oxygenation, respiratory support, cardiac massage, emergency medicine, medical devices, etc.) in line with protocols in which the institution has adopted. If there is no physician at the moment and there is an advanced life support certificate (not expired), initiate basic and advanced life support practices, apply cardiac massage, respiratory support, defibrillation and emergency synchronized cardioversion. He reports the incidents.
  • By providing cooperation with the physician in emergency situations, the institution ensures the implementation of basic / advanced life support in line with the protocols it has adopted and carries out appropriate nursing activities.
